Review of Les Misérables (1998) by Jordan B — 25 Sep 2008
Good first hour with Thurman, Neeson, and Rush doing the story perfectly, but then things go downhill quickly. Once Cosette turns into the bobble-headed bratty Claire Danes (who arguably would have been much better as Eponine) the movie turns away from the book and never looks back.
No Eponine to be seen. Marius is just there to woo Cosette. Javert commits suicide in broad daylight and no one notices. Valjean watches, but shrugs and walks away happily. End of movie. Seriously. If you love the book or musical, watch the first hour and then turn it off as soon as Fantine dies.
Otherwise, you're a glutton for your own misery.
