Review of Léon: The Professional (1994) by Benjamin Z — 03 Sep 2011
Luc Besson adores the sound and fury of machine-gun fire, explosions and overwrought women.Over-the -top is the director's first gear, and "Leon(The Professional)" is one of his best film and one of my favorites.
The film centres on a poker-faced tutor and his unpredictable student. The monkish,milk-drinking hit man of the title, played by Besson perennial Jean Reno, who is perfect in the role, and becomes an unlikely father figure to an orphaned waif, played by Natalie Portman in her first film role.
With both main leads sharing a beguiling chemistry that's all the more charming, even moving, for being so unlikely. Voted second in a poll of screen anti-heroes(Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle came first), The Professional's Leon has clearly touched a nerve with a number of people.
An awesome film!
