Review of Léon: The Professional (1994) by Alexander C — 07 Dec 2012
Though somewhat outlandish in its overall premise--the consummate hitman being befriended/seduced by a Lolita-esque little girl and learning the true meaning of Christmas--the film nevertheless resonates with charm, wit and emotion.
Jean Reno is brillant as the calm and collected Leon; he is never flamboyant or pretentious in his performance, and manages to cement his place amongst the world's great actors. Natalie Portman delivers an innocent yet visceral first performance as Leon's protege, and Gary Oldman is decidedly wicked as a corrupt DEA detective.
French director Luc Besson manages to bring his native country's unique flavor for filmmaking to America with this amazing production; complete with a ballet of gunfire.
