Review of Léon: The Professional (1994) by Ankur B — 20 Sep 2014
As stylish as ever, Luc Besson manages to craft an impeccable thriller with a breakout performance from Natalie Portman. While it's certainly uncomfortable at times, Leon: The Professional is always hypnotic and offers a welcomed perspective of New York City.
Besson focuses on the bizarre relationship between the hardened contract killer and the orphaned apprentice with an unreal sense of panache. Gary Oldman becomes a cult favorite thanks to his brilliant portrayal of the corrupt DEA officer Stansfield.
It's visually very unique, and the set pieces are well maintained with great composure. Besson plays to Reno's strengths, which complements his exuberant performance. On the whole, Leon: The Professional is a legendary thriller that offers as much substance as it does style.
