Review of Léon: The Professional (1994) by Randy B — 01 Dec 2014
The movie known for launching the career of Natalie Portman. It has all of Luc Besson's typical swagger and penchant for fantastic scenery alongside brutal, but carefully choreographed (and unrealistic) scenes of violence typically of the shootout variety.
It's a nice and engrossing film, but I'm utterly confused as to how much the public seems to eat this one up. It's far too much entangled in the "real world" to be treated as an outright fantasy, yet much of what is shown is nothing more than a 12 year old's wet dream back in 1994.
The movie hasn't aged all that well and Gary Oldman plays a great bad guy with an appropriate finish but the only thing outside of the cinematography and direction is the fact that Natalie Portman was introduced to the cinematic world.
It's a glorified action movie that's not my style.
