Review of Lenny (1974) by Anthony V — 21 Aug 2015
Bob Fosse's brilliant biopic about the late stand up comic Lenny Bruce, played by Dustin Hoffman in a bravura Oscar nominated performance, his portrayal of the tortured self-destructive and inventive Bruce is enough reason to see this fascinating motion picture.
Lenny's groundbreaking no-holds-barred comic style was way ahead of its time, filled with profanity and sexually explicit material which got his act banned in many venues. Bruce who was a heroin addict and tragically overdosed in 1966, after being harassed by the police and the courts for years.
Remarkable Oscar nominated direction by late great Fosse, with dazzling black & white cinematography by the late Bruce Surtees, and outstanding supporting performances by Jan Miner, Stanley Beck, Frankie Man, and Rashel Novikoff.
Special kudos must go to the sexy Valerie Perrine, for superlative Oscar nominated performance as Honey Bruce, Lenny's long suffering wife. But this is Hoffman's show all the way and he is a marvel to watch.
Highly Recommended.
