Review of Legally Blonde (2001) by Cameron J — 18 Mar 2015
This surprised me a lot. I was expecting it to follow the typical "I'm not good enough for that rich guy so I'll change for him" formula, but "Legally Blonde" defies those expectations with a strong female lead who out-accomplishes her male counterparts in the film without losing her personality or worldview.
Witherspoon, who gives yet another masterful performance here, creates a multidimensional character that is central to most of the film's biggest laughs, of which there are many. The plot is kind of formulaic - pretty much everything happens that you'd expect to - but there are enough diversions from the norm and genuine moments of charm for this to be one of the best comedies of the 2000s.
