Review of Left Behind: World at War (2005) by Effing B — 15 Apr 2009
More of the same, really. Essentially a 'B' movie, in spite of having Louis Gossett Jr on the cast. (Maybe he's not such a great actor in his own right, but I have a soft spot in my heart for him from his work in "The Powers of Matthew Star" back in '82. I was 11.) As compared to the others, this one was pretty boring, but had some decent one-liners. Spoiler alert is in effect for the rest of the review.
This movie gets 2 stars because of:
1. Entertaining plot. At one point, we see a band of guerrilla commandos sneaking into a heavily-guarded warehouse to steal some much needed supplies. What are they stealing? Food? Guns? Nope, it's Bibles.
2. More entertaining plot. The nefarious scheme of the antichrist is to kill the faithful via a deadly virus. We see a scene of the virus creation, and pan down to see them spraying the virus liquid down onto the objects used for virus delivery. What objects are they using to infect the population with the virus? Yep, it's Bibles.
3. Positive points for lines like "We found it! We found the antidote for the virus! It's red wine!".
4. Fewer points for a plot problem with the destruction of the antichrist's lair. The idea is that the President of the United States has to take a tracking signal into the building so they can launch a missile at the building. The President thus dies heroically. Here's the problem: it's a major public building. The President's been there several times throughout the movie. The building is, in fact, stationary. Why couldn't they just aim the missile straight at the building?
5. Fewer points because they spent 10 minutes (out of 90 total minutes) at the beginning in a wedding scene that really didn't have anything to do with the rest of the movie. I enjoyed the awkward moment, however, where the preacher (the only one in the room not recently married) softly claps his hands while watches all of the newlyweds kissing.
6. Fewer points for no nudity.
As usual, KC fans will probably like this movie. Louis Gossett Jr fans might like this movie. Fans of this series will probably like this movie. Without having read the books, I'm still going to guess that fans of the book series would be happier just re-reading the books. For anyone else, I recommend not watching this movie unless they decide to make a fourth one, and the fourth one actually turns out to be good.
