Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Alec B — 12 Aug 2008
An absolute heartbreaking masterpiece. This is Nicolas Cage's best performance and I don't think Elisabeth Shue has done or will do any better in a film. Mike Figgis (who really hasn't done anything really noteworthy since this) crafts a tremendously tragic tale of love and self-destruction.
I understand the author, John O'Brien, who wrote the original book killed himself days after signing the movie deal which gives the film even more tremendous emotional weight. It's one of a few movies that has touched me on a very deep level.
It's not a film for everyone, but it's one I won't soon forget.
