Whilst Nicolas Cage's magnificent performance is absolutely deserving of the Oscar he won for it, the rest of this movie is pretty average. The director relies mostly on montages of nothing happening set to constant weepy songs in an attempt to create atmosphere - the result is more artificial than the tremendous acting deserves.
