Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Omar L — 26 Nov 2011
I've watched it sober, buzzed, drunk, and shit faced. It doesn't matter what lenses I have on. This is my favorite film of all time. Every scene moves me and talks to me on so many different levels. It resonates as truth on a deep unconscious level and breaks through in awe with my understanding of such tragically beautiful potential.
Nic Cage. Forget everything you've ever known or seen of him. Forget it all. Take this performance fresh and new. He won best actor that year and he deserved it. He captured this character better than anyone else could have. He's dangerously good. He plays an rich successful film producer that happens to be a crazy alcoholic that drives to Vegas to drink himself to death... and I won't give it away. Elisabeth Shue. She was nominated for Best Actress and deserved to win. She plays a hooker that.. and I won't give it away. Their chemistry together is as good as you'll see.
This is my favorite film of all time. I can watch it over and over again and it never seizes to capture me. I get lost in their world. It contains so much and shows us the dignity of love and the depths of despair, and the world of loneliness and acceptance. 10/10 from me.
"We both know that I'm a drunk. And I know you are a hooker. I hope you understand that I am a person.
Who is totally at ease with that. Which is not to say that I'm indifferent or I don't care, I do. It simple means that I trust and accept your judgment.".
