Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by James C — 21 Jul 2012
Some stories are so ugly and depressing that they're not worth the telling, such is the case for Leaving Las Vegas. Based on the novel, a degenerate alcoholic goes to Las Vegas to die and ends up hooking up with a lonely prostitute; and together they spiral down a path of self-destruction.
Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue deliver excellent performances, but they're stuck in a dismal film. To some extent the story of these broken people connecting works, but it doesn't develop into anything or go anywhere.
Leaving Las Vegas is a repugnant, trashy film that doesnâ(TM)t aspire to anything.
