Review of Leaves of Grass (2009) by Jan D — 08 Mar 2010
A Coen Brothers-esque redneck crime-comedy, written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson. "Leaves of Grass" features Edward Norton playing identical twins, one is a marijuana growing yokel and the other is college professor who is lured back to his rural Oklahoma hometown to help his brother to get out of a fix.
Norton's performance is a little over the top at times, and his accent is pretty thick to say the least, but it's also a joy to watch him play around with these characters. The movie is at times both heartwarming and funny, but there is also a good deal of raw violence and dark humor.
The soundtrack features Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, The Flatlanders and Steve Earle (who you also get to see in an acting role). A flawed but interesting effort.
