Review of Leaves of Grass (2009) by Tavis B — 22 Oct 2010
"Leaves of Grass" is a collection of poetry but the movie only became alive for me when Keri Russell recited Walt Whitman's poems. She's the only actor here who seems not to be hamming it up and tries to keep her head above the cliches. Russell deserves a better movie.
This is a worn out script. Uusally reliable actor, Edward Norton, plays twins. Bill is the educated professor and is a boring character. Buddy is the marijuana-growing, troublesome twin and he's more fun but there isn't much to this cliched character that seems real. Susan Sarandon is wasted as their mother. OMG, is that Richard Dreyfuss looking seventyish and overacting...it is. I think the citizens of Oklahoma should ask for an apology. The characters are not anti-semetic, just drug addicts, but the bring the filmmakers bring ignorance to southern hicks.
