Review of Leaves of Grass (2009) by Craig F — 01 Oct 2011
It's like identical twins Bill and Brady Kincaid (Edward Norton) are two sides of one person. And they are two really different guys- an uptight college professor and a laid-back pot farmer.. As the film goes along, director Tim Blake Nelson deftly underlines their oneness and their differences.
From the beginning, each defends his own path and personal philosophy , and each claims to understand the other. Bill the professor has written deep philosophical studies, and he encourages his students to see the classic philosophers as actual living people.
Brady reads all Bill's published studies, but unlike Bill, he lives by a homegrown philosophy, and he lives it without worrying what others might think of him. I watched the film with an eye to how their two different approaches to life would work themselves out.
Each brother and his philosophy is stress-tested by the powerful actions that compound the stakes throughout the film, until the classic catharsis at the end. I give it the top 5 Star rating.
