Review of Leatherheads (2008) by Henrik S — 25 Feb 2011
I think the first and foremost reason this movie bombed at the box office and is loathed by many is bad reputation and false expectations. The movie is a straight-forward RomCom, nothing more and nothing less. The setting might suggest more grit or period drama thrown in but you will be disappointed if you expect that. While the setting and overall old school feel is a nice change from the modern, fast-paced Jennifer Aniston vehicles, it is still the same kind of boy meets girl story at its core. The movie pays homage to classic Screwball comedies, which starts with using the old Universal Logo from the 30ies and the acting, that is over the top and quite goofy, reminiscent of the antics of Cary Grant and the like.
I guess some people expect too much from this due to the high billed leading actors, Clooney and Zellweger, but I think it was more or less a pet project for Clooney than the attempt to create a romance milestone.
For what it's worth, I did like the movie and I think it is one of the better romComs out there, mainly due to Clooney's irresistible charm and suave and a lovely setting, which includes great costumes and sets.
