Review of Leap Year (2010) by Mitchell B — 28 Jan 2011
Amy Adams is magical. She is able to convey a wonderfully fragile vulnerability, always on the verge of breaking your heart, that resonates through any role... even when laboured with vapid, self-centred, hysterical, shallow and ridiculously naive characters as she is forced play here in the first half of this absolutely average, paint-by-numbers, fish out of water rom-com. Luckily once the cringingly predictable plot-line kicks into gear Adams, and to a lesser extent Matthew Goode, get to show a considerable amount of depth beyond the poorly written characters - or should I say stereo types.
Yes, there are swoon-worthy moments of romance amid the gorgeous scenery of Ireland but I put any credit on the lovely shoulders of Amy Adams. If this role was given to anyone else (dear lord can you imagine Jennifer Aniston here?) I wouldn't have been able to sit through it.
