Review of Leap of Faith (1992) by Hugo F — 27 Apr 2008
Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies. Don't think this film can be claimed to support or discount blind faith either way. Instead it simply looks at a complex of spirituality in quite a unique, heartfelt and humanistic way.
I think Martin is a master of impersonation and he parodies tent and roadside evangelism with fervor unmatched, but his character is one that is highly spiritual as all theatrical endeavors are. Another important element to this film is that it maintains that people who are lead along or coned into this kind of worship are not all bad, many have integrity and honesty.
That is important, but it is also important to appreciate the distorted caricature of christianity being portrayed here and so I think in the end it does a good job just having fun with religion and a snippet of American culture.
Even if it is not that elaborated. God I love Steve. Look at the suit of God he is wearing! Ha ha ha!
