Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Deering R — 02 Feb 2008
Overrated, noirish French film from the great Jean-Pierre Melville. I found this film exceedingly tedious, largely I suspect because I felt Alain Delon's hired gun was more cold than cool. For a film that relies so heavily on mood over plot, this is a major problem and is the film's undoing.
Some have called this Melville's best work, but when comparing the film to a work of such substance as Army of Shadows, I find it hard to recommend. Above average, but not one I'm dying to see again any time soon.
