Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Patrick D — 16 Jun 2008
I am a pretty big fan of french film, and especially of the time period when this movie was made. Although 60s french film does tend to lean towards the director masturbarting for 90+ mins, this film does not end up going overboard, not to say it doesn't maintain some art and style, which it's brimming with. What's also brilliant, as with the alot of film at this time and geography, it's all about human nature yet there is an incredibly intriguing and exciting crime element in the story, on par with other great crime films.
I also thought Alain Delon was a pretty boy actor, yet in this film he plays an extremely cool, and even chilling role as the contract killer.
I would hazard a claim that even a modern crime drama fan wouldn't be able to peel his/her eyes off of this.
Although I love Criterion for bringing out beautiful movies, I wish they weren't so expensive. Although I did only rent this one, I would love to add it to my collection for repeat watchings.
