Review of Le Samouraï (1967) by Nicolas L — 16 Feb 2009
Having finally seen this movie, I now understand the impact Jean-Pierre Melville's brand of cinematic cool has had on the work of directors as diverse as John Woo, Johnnie To, Alex Cox, and Quentin Tarantino (then again, what director HASN'T had an impact on our lantern-jawed friend?).
I really appreciated the slow, quiet pace of this movie, and I was totally wrapped up in what was going on. This movie doesn't have a lot of action or quick cuts, nor does it need it, the movie keeps you interested because of the great central character that is Jef Costello (played by a hypnotic Alain Delon), a character that has been contorted and homaged throughout cinema.
If you like existentialist fare, this is one that is not to be missed.
