Review of Le Havre (2011) by Olly H — 15 Nov 2012
Very good film about an elder man who helps a teenage runaway from africa on his way to london. The movie is completely styled in the seventies, although it plays in our time ( the cleaning of the immigrants field in calais was 2010) , it also portrays the poverty of the population in that ugly city , how the people fight to survive but still have (in general) enough heart and courage to help an illegal immigrant boy.
Yes, I know, I called the city ugly, but this movie is at the same time a sort of love declaration for the city and its people. The humour, very dark and satiric, is typical kaurismÄki of course, who could forget his brilliant satirical tale about the "man without a past".
I understand that people like this movie, but I dont think of it as a masterpiece per se.I think it got a bit overrated because in a very weak year, it had to stand out. Its better than the average , but I have seen better from the same director.
