Review of Le Havre (2011) by Paul K — 31 May 2014
Aki Kaurismaki gets all my stars, not sure why. The plotting is simplistic, the photography is OK-ish, and the acting is fine I guess. But somehow it adds up to more than the sum of its parts. His stories are always whimsical and his main characters always come from the heart.
They are from the margins of society, and the action is often set in a port town. In this case the situation of the illegal immigrant takes centre stage, as it should and so rarely does. Great movie.
