Review of Le Corbeau (1943) by Dan B — 22 Oct 2008
Provincial poison pen letter suspenser, that works not only as a straight thriller, but also as a dissection of suspicion, mistrust and small town gossip. The dialogue is remarkably frank for the time and every character is in some way morally ambivalent.
Clouzot's direction is superb, hinting at hidden menace in the most innocuous of images, while the performances (particularly Fresnay and Larquey) are all note perfect. Definitely one to see.
