Review of Le Cercle Rouge (1970) by Asim D — 14 Nov 2004
There are cool films, there are cooler films, and then there are Jean Pierre Melville films. Le Cercle Rouge, which derives it's name from a buddhist philosophy, is a masterpiece of austere minimalism.
On the surface, it's cinematic approach seems backwards, but by the art of omission the film creates a breathing world. By carefully holding back key pieces of information Melville creates a film that can be watched over and over because if we ignore what is in front then we can imagine what is behind.
