Review of Lazer Team (2016) by Jamieprov — 30 Jan 2016
A film cannot succeed without solid writing. Critics can say what they like about this film, that the special effects were sub-par, the acting was hit or miss, whatever. The fact of the matter was that the writing was not just funny, often downright hilarious, and it was delivered exceedingly well.
Critics tend to have problems with comedies, because they don't treat it like a comedic film, but like a regular drama or action film with comedy sprinkled in. It's not Avengers that has some good comedic writing; it's a comedy film, made to deliver comedy.
The special effects, the action, everything is a vehicle for delivering the next joke. A comedic movie is like a standup set with a story to tie it together, and Lazer Team does just that. The story is cohesive and engaging enough to get you to the next joke, and you don't have to wait long! If you're going to see Lazer Team to do anything but laugh, you're going for the wrong reason.
Expect to laugh and be engaged when you're not. But I guess most critics are humorless old farts.
