Review of Lawless (2012) by Wendy K — 29 Mar 2013
Well, the critics certainly weren't wrong when they said the movie is flawed, because it really is. But I think my dislike for this film is mostly on a personal level - I really can't stand westerns. I don't understand the point of westerns. Like if I wanted to see people shoot each other, I would watch a Michael Bay film. Anyhow, not much to say about this film. I pretty much watched it for Jessica Chastain and Tom Hardy - the latter who has this god-awful accent that's maybe even worse than his "The Dark Knight Rises" accent, I couldn't comprehend it at all. Shia LaBeouf basically plays himself all the way through. Jessica Chastain, while I love her, was pretty forgetteable. I'd say if there's anybody who really stood out, it was Guy Pearce. He was amazing... I just got really confused with the story because I couldn't understand them half the time, and when I did understand them, I just didn't care enough. Tom Hardy's accent was so distracting, I didn't believe in any of his macho-man schtick... Which means you're pretty much lost for at least half of the film.
Oh pardon me, it's not a Western. Still. Cowboy hats. Western-like.
