Review of Law of Desire (1987) by Adam K — 18 Jan 2008
A deep, dark and at times uncomfortable film that tells of an obsessive love triangle. this was one of almodovar's first ventures into the risky subject of homosexuality (maybe not as risky by the standards of spanish cinema).
it can almost be seen as a prerequisite to bad education. antonio banderas turns up as the most memorable character and obviously, the villain of the group. his role as the obsessed and often desperately malicious antonio was a clear show of his acting talents in the spanish cinematic world.
carmen maura was also excellent as the sister of eusebio poncela's character. she was often outrageous and quick with her lines and character personality. this still remains a controversial piece for almodovar.
at times it can be campy, but this was made in the 80s and played with a style that often fit the scenario. well shot, with a superbly written plot, this is a well made and difficult thriller from the iconic almodovar, a man who has defined what makes spanish cinema great.
