Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Grant P — 09 Dec 2007
What an utter disappointment. The first hour is a tense and interesting mystery, but it's simply thrown away for Antonioni's La Dolce Vita-esque indulgences/tedium. His later films are understated just like this one, but those actually work to his advantage. There's a fine line between appealing understatement, which can actually highlight aspects of a film, and the monotony represented in L'avventura. We're supposed to care about Anna, but her presence in the latter half of the film simply evaporates. Even Claudiaâ??s mentioning of her in the final minutes does little to provoke me. I don't care about her and Sandro; I only cared about Anna's effect on their relationship, which began promising but then dwindled quickly like the film.
Others may view the film as a study of Claudia and Sandro's characters, which is fine, but why waste an hour of the film setting up Anna's situation if nothing will come of it?
