Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Rob S — 18 Jan 2010
Why is this a 2 1/2 hour film? plot could be compressed to about 45 minutes and manages to wander all over the place despite how spare it is. we're clearly not meant to like these characters. cinematography is nice, but pretty pictures are a dime a dozen.
it seems to me that antonioni thinks his ideas carry a lot more weight than they do. i've seen three of his films, and they all seem to be saying roughly the same thing. the fact is, existentialism is interesting for all of about 20 minutes (fellini understood this, and made La Dolce Vita deal with a lot more than existentialism alone).
even the Coen brothers, existentialists to the core, realize that something else needs to be happening to make an interesting film out of these ideas. how this is even considered in the same league as Fellini is beyond me.
