Review of Latter Days (2004) by Kay S — 21 Feb 2010
Latter Days is one of my top romantic-themed dramas, and it may have something to do with the gay love story central to the plot. Actually, the love story is only a fraction of that plot as most of this movie is devoted to the development of that love and the various obstacles along the way.
Christian, a adonis-like party boy, falls for Eric, a mormon missionary. Of course, clashes ensue when the partying and spirituality turn out to not mesh well, but all-in-all, both young men go through changes.
There is also a series of subplots, including a mormon reform facility and a best friend who is trying to start a singing career honsetly, though quite possibly resorting to a rather dishonest (yet understandably, loving) decision that sets her career rolling.
A strong supporting cast adds much needed strength to this film, the most stunning falling to Mary Kay Place, who plays Eric's saddened mother with a devastating ferocity. Also enjoyable in her limited screen-time is Jacqueline Bisset who simply oozes class whenever she graces the plot.
Opposites attract... though not really... in this story about two worlds colliding and leading to a potentially powerful relationship... being both beautiful and heartbreaking in equal measure.
