Review of L'Atalante (1934) by Shane B — 14 Apr 2008
One of the greatest films I can think of. I first saw this back in the early 1990's (when it was finally re-issued as it was originally meant to be seen) and it has haunted me ever since. A sublime poem of a film that mixes wonderful characters with surrealism and neorealism and has influenced scores of filmmakers since.
Proves that plot is not the be all to a great movie. Simply put, a masterpiece.
