Review of Last Train Home (2009) by Roy S — 26 Jul 2010
Chinese documentary ostensibly about the rush home by tens of millions of migrant workers for Chinese New Years, but really about the impact of China's new economy on the lives of workers. Parents routinely leave their children in the country to work in the city and see them once a year.
Not suprisingly the kids do not have much of an attachment to their parents, and though education is seemingly the only topic of conversation during the short visits home the children are soon pulled into the factories themselves.
The parents after over ten years had a dormatory-like room, while the new arrivals lived in something more like a barracks, only more crowded. Quite illuminating.
