Review of Last Train Home (2009) by Sandy K — 25 Apr 2011
This documentary of Chinese migrant workers tells the story of one family over the course of a few years -- the couple's sacrifices to provide for their children, keeping them both physically and emotionally distant.
The gradual unraveling of the family is a tragedy that is increasingly difficult to watch as the story unfolds, and by the last 30 minutes I felt like an intruder on their personal lives. In fact, I couldn't help thinking the relentless observation of the camera crews might have contributed to this family's tragedy, which made it even more painful to watch.
Even the spectacular footage of the teeming cities, travel by train/boat, and the lush countryside couldn't make up for the hopeless pain of these people.
