Review of Last Train Home (2009) by Steve W — 14 Sep 2011
Blurs the line between documentary and indie movie. No interviews, and they only look at the camera once or twice. The dialogue of course is definitely set up, as we see a few years of a rural family in China.
As a viewer, it becomes absorbing and you feel like you're in the room. It starts out about the family's annual train ride home from the big city, in which the parents of the family are always at work to support their children's education. But their daughter wants to work and find a life of her own, which leads to the family drama.
If they were to take away the family member monologues and the opening and ending statement, this would be just another independent foreign movie with a gritty realistic feel. Instead, it is like Nanook of the North, a bit staged but very informative.
