Review of Last Tango in Paris (1972) by A P — 26 Oct 2009
It is one of the few films that I would use the term "beautiful" to describe it. I say this film is beautiful because of its cinematography and the humanity of the characters. Brando's character,(Paul) although a scoundrel is a tortured soul a man who you can't help but feel empathy for even though he consistently proves to Maria Schneider that all he views her as is an object to which he channels his frustrations and sexual desires.
Maria Schneider is being used both by the Brando character and her boyfriend in the film. One uses her for sex, the other as a way to achieve his own visions of success. Many complained that her performance was "annoying" but I beg to differ.
Schneider's character is caught between two men who have really nothing to offer her and she expresses that quite well towards the third act of the picture.
