Review of Last Tango in Paris (1972) by Stuart W — 03 Oct 2007
One of those movies that will disappoint if you believe in the hype. This is a slow moving examination of how two people decide to forget their own lives and difficulties and have a sexual affair where they share nothing about each other.
Bernardo Bertolucci manages to make us feel for Brando's grief-riddened American, while Maria Schneider adds an air of innocence to the process. The thing about this movie, comapred to modern movies, it is very tame now. Even the infamous 'butter' scene isn't as shocking.
Still an impressive movie but don't expect tittilation, but a beautiful tale of unrequited love.
