Review of Last Tango in Paris (1972) by Rabeea'h A — 27 Oct 2007
Saw this four years back and again last week. The sadomasochistic relationship between the obsessive girl-child ('growing older is a crime') and the emotionally aloof Brando is used as a as a metonymy for larger ideological concerns of indicting the bourgeois family structures which 'attempts to civilise' the savage in us all, left me a little unsettled.
The anguish of the characters is very palpable and a little too relatable in a few places. Perhaps if the melodrama had been tempered a tad bit, this may have been a very potent film. Watch.
