Review of Last Night (1998) by Eric M — 07 May 2009
An film with an interesting concept that doesn't really repay the viewing. The world is going to end at midnight and everyone is at the point of acceptance. As the sun gets brighter in the sky, everyone tries to rush towards the end they've planned but find their lives intersecting up until the final moments.
One depressing family wants to stay together while their middle-aged son wants to be alone, a husband and wife intended to carry out a suicide pact, and one horny fellow wants to experience everything out of sex he can.
Most of the humor is of the garden variety light comedy spring, rather than the grim, black, resigned sort that should be characteristic of characters accepting the upcoming apocalypse. That and writer/director/star McKellar doesn't have much of a screen presence and his role in the film always gives him the agency over the other characters, which I'm sure must make him feel great, but hurts the film.
I can feel the fourth wall break every time he gains the upper hand in a plot point. A lot of the dialogue is pretty lifeless as well.
