Review of Last Night (1998) by Andrew C — 14 Oct 2010
This film is something I had been waiting for but never saw then found out that it came out in 1998. The high concept of Deep Impact and Armageddon is taken to a smaller scale, its like the camera got bored (rightly so) of the reasons why it is happening and decided to focus on the extras milling around wondering what its all worth.
The film is moving and beautifully filmed, it has a tone sometimes that makes you forget that the end of the world is heading its way,but this no way makes it bad it simply makes it more gripping. It leaves you feeling somehow hopeful in its lack of hope.
The chorus of the film is the Radio DJ who says "with you to the end" and David Cronenberg reminding people "that we are still supplying gas to the end", remind you of the impending doom of the characters, and your with them till the bitter end.
This film is just a masterpiece. the last line of the film is almost the punch line, the only clue as to what is destroying the world. "times like this I miss the night".
