Review of Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989) by Nick G — 05 Jul 2008
'Last Exit' is a near perfect adaptation of an infamous novel by Hubert Selby Jr. Such beat literature helped fuel riots in America and 'Brooklyn' (the book) was the centre of an obscenity trial in the UK.
Before Selby (1964), no one even dared expose this side of the US and proved to be a perfect essay in subculture, which was obviously not (Hollywood) 'Oscar' material. It's really difficult to find fault here and all the performances together with the violence (both physical and sexual) all looks pretty authentic.
It's like the mud, rags and tatters of hyper realism, placed in a true life fantasy land. A masterpiece!
