Review of Last Days in the Desert (2016) by Tim O — 28 Jan 2015
If stunning visuals are all you need in a film, this is most definitely for you. In the end, this movie could just couldn't make up its mind what it wanted to be. Sometimes authentic and sometimes seeming to try way too hard to be starkly artistic.
One moment an open-ended philosophical entreaty, the next a heavy-handed cliché rendering of an already over told story. Performances are almost too manufactured in how consistently understated they are.
Emotionally, these characters and performances just don't land. It is a grueling, plodding hour and a half with very little shape or artistry, save for the stunning landscapes. I would perhaps forgive this film if the last 10 minutes had simply never been shot, but they were and they ruin a perfectly mediocre movie.
