Review of Last Days in the Desert (2016) by Ian G — 26 Aug 2016
An average bible tale that assembled a decent cast of actors including the always reliable Ewan Macgregor and newcomer Tye Sheridan who was also in this summers Xmen : Apocalypse, and GOT veteran Ciaran Hands, circling around Jesus' final days in the dessert and the devils, also played by Macgregor, trying to temp Jesus to disrupt and corrupt the family dynamic before he gets to the end of his trials.
The big hero for the piece is Emmanuelle Luebeski, who again acts as the DOP for this one, bringing his floating and meditative shooting style to the project, which adds a much needed grandeur to the desserts where the film was shot.
Had it not been for this element, Last Days in the Dessert is pretty much a chamber piece with the principles going back and forth about morality regarding faithful marriages, a son's right to move on, assisted suicide, and so forth.
Intriguing but a tad dull at times, most defintely a film you have to be in the mood for to fully appreciate which seems to be a growing trend with Luebeski shot films of late wioth the possible exception of Gravity.
Decent if it could have taken more risks .
