Review of Last Chance Harvey (2008) by Mark O — 07 Nov 2009
Hardly groundbreaking stuff, this takes a lot of the usual traits of a romantic comedy but applies them to characters who are a little older than is usually the case. It's a simple trick, but it makes things seem fresher and lends familiar scenes a different angle.
The central relationship is very appealing, and the sight of two mature, adult characters laying their vulnerabilities on the line is recognisably human. Sure, the sentimentality and predictable plotline is nothing to write home about, but sometimes all you need for a film of this kind to work is two real people.
