Review of Last Chance Harvey (2008) by Jonathan B — 05 Jul 2014

A nice enough love story where, frankly, not a great deal happens but what does happen is beautifully observed and deftly played but the leads Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. I've often found Hoffman difficult to watch but here, he acts with subtlety and grace providing a perfect foil for the magnificent Thompson.

She is perfect in the role as the slightly uptight and fragile Kate. There's a great little role for Eileen Atkins as Kate's clingy mother who provides some gentle comedic relief as she becomes obsessed with the comings and goings of her suspicious neighbour.

This film is undemanding and unfolds at a slightly pedestrian pace befitting the characters however it is charming and I was left with a warm feeling that wasn't just because of the amount of wine I'd consumed while watching it.
