Review of Lars and the Real Girl (2007) by Archibald T — 22 Mar 2011
In order for Lars to reach out for help he purchases a sex doll, calls her Bianca and decides, in a delusional way, to think of this doll as, well, real. His cry for help is through this act alone and it's pretty sad if a bit odd.
What I really liked about this film though is the setting. It has a kind of lived in feel to it which made every character, even Bianca, seem real. The shots of the scenery when it snows or when it looks like it's going to snow was pretty great to look at.
The music as well enhanced this tale giving it a whimsical feel, particularly when Lars is dancing alone, in a delusional way as he pretends to slow dance "with" Bianca, to 'This Must Be The Place' by The Talking Heads.
It's hard to label this film as a comedy because it's more of a light drama than anything else. If that's what you're looking for than give this a try.
