Review of Lars and the Real Girl (2007) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
It really is a cracker of a film so I just upgraded my rating :).
This movie is hilarious and upsetting at the same time. Gosling is such a superb actor he shifts Lars between a comedic character and a tragic representation of many men in the real world.
I'd seen a documentary about 'real girls' and the men who keep them as their companions. It was such an intriguing subject and to see it tackled in feature film form is great.
Bianca (the real girl doll) enters Lars' life when he needs her most and wont leave until Lars himself deems it time. At first there is a fear of Lars being further ostracized because of his new girlfriend but what follows is a heart warming tale of a towns acceptance and love for a man still living with ghosts from the past.
It really is a film unlike any I have seen and its characters slowly grow on you as you watch their journey. Not for everyone but if you enjoy subtle humour this one may be for you.
