Review of Larry Crowne (2011) by Daniel A — 10 Nov 2011
Bland. Tom Hanks' second directorial feature will satisfy some, but it's hardly worthy of his Hollywood status. Much of the problem lies within the film's premise and the fact that it all feels rather false.
The characters, conversations, and emerging relationships when looked at properly are unanimously phoney, even within the typical romantic comedy paradigm it doesn't look right. Furthermore the laughs are sparse and the romance, while intentionally subtle, is also completely forgettable.
The novelty of seeing two American greats like Hanks and Julia Roberts play off each other quickly evaporates when you realise neither is bringing their A game, it's barely even their D game. All in all Larry Crowne isn't terrible but disappoints for its many wasted opportunities.
