Review of Larry Crowne (2011) by Fiona B — 08 Nov 2018
The script would have been a great read: middle-aged guy loses job and has to find a new path. Academic stamped teacher ends up without her dreams and the man of her dreams. Add two masters of rom-com and a very hot supporting cast. Should be a an emotional ride with a rocket ending.
It's a no! Unbelievably flat acting from Tom Hanks and the usually loud Julia Roberts, make this a frustrating experience, because you can tell how great each character has been shaped by that keen-eyed writer Nina. Her wicked My big fat Greek wedding was stereotyping on steroids.
The major problem seems to come from a too-light director's hand. One of the worst crimes in film is too be able to "hear" the directions to the cast. And Mr. "Nice-guy" Tom Hanks is playing movie director with no rockets on board.. He's ordered himself into a low-key performance and the rest of the cast has to dampen down the action to match.
Instead of a hot Harley Davidson roar, it's a rom-com on warm milk and a putt putt scooter.
