Review of Lantana (2001) by Cary C — 22 Sep 2007
One of the best Australian films ever made. The opening credits reveal the body of a woman lying face down in bushes . . . and only at the end of the film do we learn which of the fascinating characters suffered this awful fate, and how.
Was it Valerie, the tormented counsellor whose husband may or may not be having an affair with one of her male clients and whose daughter was abducted and killed previously? Or is it someone else. Other threads include the meltdown of a 'perfect' marriage of a police officer, and the hollow yearnings of his 'mistress' .
. . Ultimately this movie is incredibly touching and full of profound truth and warmth without ever being as preachy as a Hollywood movie usually is. Wonderful performances and an edgy moody score make it something of a masterpiece.
